Comprehensive Eye Exam

Good vision is important, and if you wear eyeglasses or contact lenses, then you need regular eye exams to check for vision changes and make sure your prescription is up to date.

Many people don’t realize that a comprehensive eye exam is an important part of healthcare, even if you feel your vision is fine. During a comprehensive eye exam, our expert doctor at Ensight Eyecare not only checks your visual acuity but also evaluates your eye health. Many eye diseases have little to no symptoms in the early stages, so it’s important to see an eye doctor on a regular basis. An eye exam can also detect signs of other conditions you may be unaware of, such as diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disease, and high cholesterol.

While the specific tests can vary based on your unique needs, most eye exams will include the following:

Patient History

Your doctor at Ensight Eyecare will ask you questions about any vision or eye health problems you may be having, your overall health, medications you’re currently taking, and any work-related or environmental situations that could affect your vision and eye health. Your doctor will also want to know whether there’s a history of eye diseases in your family.

Visual Acuity

Visual acuity, otherwise known as the clarity or sharpness of your vision, is measured at 20 feet using the Snellen chart.

Eye Focusing, Teaming, and Alignment Testing

Your eyes need to be able to change focus and work well together for clear vision. Your doctor will assess your ocular motility and binocular vision to determine how well your eyes focus and work together. This testing can identify problems that prevent your eyes from effectively focusing or working together as a team.

Refraction

A refraction determines the lens power needed to correct any refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

Eye Health Evaluation

Your doctor will use a variety of instruments, such as a microscope and other advanced technologies, to assess your eye health. They may also dilate your pupils to see the structures inside your eyes. During the eye health evaluation, your doctor will be able to check the pressure in your eyes and can also identify eye and systemic diseases of which you may not be aware.

At the end of your eye exam, your optometrist will provide you with a prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses if you need them to see your best. They’ll also talk to you about any vision or eye health issues they may have discovered during the eye exam.
